Combating antimicrobial resistance with a ultrafast, compact and scalable platform for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Market:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global crisis, causing 1.27 million deaths annually. Current methods for antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) take 72 hours to show which drugs will effectively fight an infection, delaying treatment. Our rapid microfluidic-based technology targets the $3.9 billion AST market, with initial focus on managing sepsis in low-resource settings.

Technology:

Our microchamber-based microfluidic platform uses freeze-dried antibiotics and smartphone imaging or commercial plate readers to enable rapid, point-of-care AST readouts easily interpreted with color or fluorescent coding. In addition to speeding up therapy, the device could reduce “shots on goal” that risk AMR developing in the clinic. This compact technology eliminates the need for expensive lab equipment and reduces turnaround time to under two hours, making AST accessible in limited resource-contexts where it is needed the most.

Advantages:

  • Rapid AST results (<2 hours)

  • Smartphone-based imaging

  • No complex lab equipment

  • Stable, freeze-dried antibiotics

  • Cost-effective for low-income regions

Development Stage:

  • Prototype (Advanced prototype with functional microfluidic device)
