The Next Generation Incubator

TrueCath, Inc. is a medical device company developing the TrueCath auto-catheter: first-attempt IV placement in any environment that requires minimal training.

Market:

Almost everyone has required a vascular access procedure for one reason or another – most likely to administer fluids, drugs, or solutions, to obtain and monitor vital signs, to place a long term access device or simply to draw blood. More than 1.3 billion peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are placed yearly, with a 54% first insertion and overall 90% failure rate primarily due to over-penetration of the vessel. This leads to local pain, phlebitis, bruising, loss of the vein and extended hospital stays. The TrueCath auto-catheter addresses the unmet need for reliable PIVC placement.

Technology:

The TrueCath auto-catheter addresses this unmet need by using a mild vacuum in the flashback chamber as a mechanical sensor to detect the instant the needle tip enters the vein and automatically places the softgel catheter into the vein lumen. This occurs in 1/16 of a second, which is faster than operator reaction time, thus eliminating the possibility of the practitioner puncturing the back wall of the vessel. As a result, the TrueCath auto-catheter eliminates the need for advanced training or expensive IV teams, and its added functionality integrates seamlessly into current clinical workflow without any additional equipment or procedures.

Advantages:

  • Assures single-wall venous access via automatic deployment
  • Works independent of operator skill level
  • Eliminates the need to directly visualize the vessel of interest
  • Easily incorporates into existing PIVCs
