Market:
CarbonBuilt offers the concrete industry reduced environmental impact, greater customer demand and increased profitability, while providing heavy industry (e.g., power plants and cement kilns), a low cost pathway to reduce their CO₂ emissions. The impact of the technology is conditioned by the global concrete market (TAM: over 20 billion tons produced and $1.2 trillion revenue). CarbonBuilt’s initial segment of prefabricated concrete blocks comprises $5 billion within the USA.
Technology:
CarbonBuilt’s Reversa™ platform, which was developed over the course of seven years at UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management, includes innovations to both the concrete mixture design and the curing process. Reversa formulations includes hydrated lime, a widely-available commodity chemical used in a wide range of applications, and enables increased and more flexible use of waste materials like fly ash. In Reversa™’s curing process, CO₂ contained within dilute flue gas streams (with no requirement for capture or purification) is permanently sequestered into the concrete. Together, these innovations enable concrete manufacturers to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their products in a manner that increases profitability.Advantages:
- Produces concrete products that meet existing specifications
- Significantly lower CO₂ footprint than conventional concrete
- Permanently converts CO₂ into a solid
- Easily integrates into existing supply chain for materials, CO₂ and concrete production
- Lowest cost of CO₂ mineralization technologies
Development Stage:
- Commercial
Patents:
- Enhanced carbonation and carbon sequestration in cementitious binders; WO2016061251A1 (2014-10-15)
- Efficient integration of manufacturing of upcycled concrete product into power plants; US20190177220A1 (2016-10-26)
- Upcycled CO₂-negative concrete product for use in construction; WO2018081308A1 (2016-10-26)
